Sound QualityThe Amazon 2 Echo (4th Gen) w/ Echo Sub has Good overall sound quality - this model reproduces music and dialog reasonably well despite the obvious shortcomings in its sound. Bass has good impact and goes fairly deep, but is somewhat prominent and boomy. Midrange is fairly even but is somewhat echoey, hazy, rough and congested, and the bass somewhat overwhelms the lower midrange. Treble is somewhat subdued, a bit smeared and sizzly, and upper treble is muted. Does a so-so job of recovering room ambience; the echoey quality of the midrange tends to mask the natural room ambience of recordings, and the overall sound is somewhat congested. When the Echo 4th Gen is used as a stereo pair with the Echo Sub only WiFi streaming content was possible at the time of testing. Provides a decent volume level in a medium sized room. Sound was often glitchy when changing volume - the response to changes in volume was sluggish, the Echo 4th Gen speakers would occasionally get out of sync with each other which made the echo worse, and the Echo Sub may also lead or lag the volume of the other speakers. When compared to a single Echo 4th Gen the Echo 4th Gen w/ Echo Sub combo has a more even sounding midrange with deeper bass and a wider sound stage, but the sound is echoey and the bass is more prominent and boomy.

Ease of Use
Overall ease of use of the Amazon 2 Echo (4th Gen) w/ Echo Sub is very good. Wireless setup: Setup requires an app downloaded to a device or device connection, easy but not intuitive - there are many tedious steps to combine the three speakers - instructions needed. Console controls: Volume controls are prominent +/- control buttons with non-persistent graphical position markings of volume level is easily repeatable via verbal commands and easy to actuate. Audio mute: For unit if Wi-Fi home or Wi-Fi Portable model with multiroom capability that has controls on the speaker but lacks mute. Microphone mute: Dedicated control but the marking is not the most obvious, clear indication when it is engaged. Source selections: Requires app to be installed, app installation is straight forward. Once app is installed switching between wireless sources is fairly intuitive within the app. Can't select Bluetooth but Bluetooth can be connected by verbal command to previously paired device - ready to play. App remote: Volume control symbol, then volume slider, lacks index markings so not easily repeatable, but easy to actuate. Shown for currently playing streamed WiFi music. Mute: (Remote) Well marked, well placed, clear indication when it is engaged and mutes the line input. Voice transport controls: Natural language control of transport (Play/Pause/Skip/Mute), volume controls and source selection was easy and intuitive.
