Bose has recalled more than 634,000 batteries designed for use in its S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ speakers because they could overheat and ignite, posing a fire hazard, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Consumers should remove the battery packs immediately and request a free replacement, Bose says. Once the battery packs are removed you can continue to operate the speakers using AC power.

The manufacturer has received seven reports of the battery packs melting, producing smoke, or catching fire, including six reports of property damage. No injuries have been reported.

See below for information about finding the battery’s serial number and contacting Bose to obtain the free replacement.

The speakers were sold at Bose, Best Buy, and other retail outlets nationwide and online at Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, Bose.com, Walmart.com, and other sites from December 2017 through July 2026. The individual battery packs were priced between $100 and $160, while the speaker systems were sold with the battery packs included for $700.

The S1 Pro was evaluated by Consumer Reports testers and is included in our wireless & Bluetooth speaker ratings. The model didn’t perform well enough to earn a CR recommendation.

The Details

Devices affected: This recall involves lithium-ion rechargeable battery packs intended for use with Bose S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ portable Bluetooth speaker systems. The serial number of the battery packs begins with one of the following six-digit strings: 083723, 078352, 084105, 078591, 078592, 084106, or 086409. The full 17-digit serial number is printed on a label placed at the bottom of the battery pack. The packs were sold not only with the S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ Portable Bluetooth Speaker Systems, but also as accessories and replacement parts.

The units were sold at Bose, Best Buy, and other retail stores and online at Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, Bose.com, Walmart.com, and other sites.

The recall affects about 634,759 units sold in the U.S. About 35,400 were sold in Canada.

The problem: The recalled lithium-ion battery packs can overheat and ignite, posing a risk of injury from fire and overheating hazards. Bose has received seven reports of the battery packs melting, producing smoke, or catching fire, including six reports of property damage. No injuries have been reported.

The fix: Consumers should remove the recalled battery packs from the speakers and stop using them immediately. Once the battery pack is removed, consumers may continue to use their S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ portable Bluetooth speakers while connected to AC power.

The long-term fix is a free battery replacement from Bose. Consumers will be asked to register and provide the affected battery pack’s serial number at www.support.bose.com/s1-battery-recall to receive the replacement.

Consumers should dispose of the affected battery pack in accordance with local and state regulations.

Battery disposal: Do not throw the recalled lithium-ion battery pack in the trash, the general recycling stream (e.g., street-level or curbside recycling bins), or used battery recycling boxes found at retail and home improvement stores.

Recalled lithium-ion batteries present a greater risk of fire, so must be handled differently. Your municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center may accept this recalled lithium-ion battery pack for disposal. Before taking your battery pack to a HHW collection center, contact that office and ask whether it accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries. If it does not, contact your municipality for further guidance.

How to contact the manufacturer: Call Bose toll-free at 800-278-1083 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET on Saturday.
