Sound quality: Sony's SRS-X55 has good overall sound quality. Bass has good impact but it's somewhat pronounced and boomy and doesn't go deep. Midrange is fairly even but a bit soft and grainy. Treble is extended but smeared and dull. The unit only does a mediocre job recovering room ambience. The overall sound is a bit congested and lacks detail. There's no significant sound-quality difference between Bluetooth and wired connections. The speaker also provides a decent volume level in a small- to medium-sized room. The Sound setting not only makes the music louder, it also makes the treble slightly more prominent and echoey. The sound stage is also taller.
Ease of use: We found the system's ease of use-including the Bluetooth pairing-to be very good overall. The touch controls are large and simple to spot. The volume is also well-marked. The source selector is easy to find on top of the unit and it clearly indicates the selection. However, the console lacks a mute control as well as a remote, which may be an issue if it's not paired with a Bluetooth device that can serve in that role.
