Gas grills take a real beating. You’d never expect your fridge to hum along smoothly after you shifted it around your deck, moved it in and out of your garage twice a year, or left it out in the rain. But we subject our gas grills to exactly that—and still expect them to light up effortlessly and sear our burgers and brats without a hitch. It’s no wonder so many brands disappoint. Fortunately, we know that a fair number are, in fact, up to that challenge based on data from our member surveys.

While our test engineers assess dozens of models for performance each year, our survey department asks thousands of members about their own gas grills, looking for the brands that hold up well over time. If you’re in the market for a reliable one, start with our grill buying guide. CR members can also jump to our gas grill ratings, which include hundreds of models.

More on Grills

In Consumer Reports’ latest surveys, conducted in the fall of 2019 and the summer of 2020 and 2021, members reported on their experiences with nearly 70,000 gas grills purchased new between 2011 and 2021. Specifically, we asked them about problems they had with their grills, and used a statistical model to turn those answers into ratings for predicted reliability by the fifth year of ownership. We also asked members how likely they were to recommend their grill to a friend or family member. Those responses were used for our owner satisfaction ratings.

“When you browse our gas grill ratings, you’ll see that predicted reliability and owner satisfaction are scored, along with the performance testing that occurs in our labs,” says Martin Lachter, a research program leader at CR. “Taken together, they paint a really robust picture of product quality.”
