The plant-based meat company Impossible Foods has announced a recall of its Impossible Chicken Nuggets Made from Plants and Impossible Wild Nuggies because the products may contain small pieces of wood, according to a blog post on the company’s website. No injuries have been reported.

“This action was taken following a very small number of reports of the presence of wood,” in the company’s Chicken Nuggets, produced by its co-manufacturer OSI Industries, LLC, a spokesperson for the company told Consumer Reports. No issues were found with the Wild Nuggies, but the company recalled them as well.

The Chicken Nuggets come in two package sizes, 13.5 ounces and 2 pounds, and the Wild Nuggies come in 13.5 ounce packages. They were produced between Oct. 20 and Nov. 23, 2022.  They may still be in consumers’ freezers.

“Retailers have confirmed that the recalled lots of chicken nuggets have now been fully removed from store shelves and all product available for purchase was manufactured after the recall dates,” the spokesperson said.

More than 500 lot codes are involved in this recall. You can get a list of the lot codes on the company’s website. The lot codes are located on the back of the package in the lower right corner below the “best by” or “if frozen, use by” date.

“Foreign materials can get into foods during the production process,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety at Consumer Reports, “and if you bite into them, they may cause mouth injuries, and if you swallow them, they may injure the gastrointestinal tract.”

Impossible Foods is offering customers who bought the recalled product a coupon for a future purchase, but is not issuing refunds at this time.
