The Hillshire Brands Company has issued a nationwide recall of approximately 58 million pounds of various Jimmy Dean sausage-on-a-stick products and State Fair corn dogs. The company received multiple consumer complaints about extraneous material in the products. Five people were injured.

An investigation found that pieces of wood got into the batter used to make the coating for corn dogs, and the pancakes and French toast wrappings for the sausage products.

It’s not uncommon for materials such as wood, plastic, and rubber to get into food during manufacturing. “Foreign objects in foods are a top reason why products are recalled,” says Sana Mujahid, PhD, manager of food safety research and testing at Consumer Reports. “They can cause mouth lacerations, broken teeth, digestive issues, or choking.”

If you’ve purchased these products, don’t eat them. Throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them for a refund.
