Kraft Singles American Cheese Is Recalled Due to Problem With Plastic Wrapper

Six people reported choking on plastic that was stuck to the processed cheese

Packaging for Kraft Singles Source: FDA

Kraft Heinz is recalling packages of 24- and 72-count individually wrapped Kraft Singles American processed cheese slices—83,000 cases in all—because an extra piece of plastic may remain adhered to the slice even after the wrapper has been removed.

The company said in a statement that it received several consumer complaints. In six cases, consumers said they choked or gagged on the leftover plastic. The problem, Kraft Heinz said, was with one of its wrapping machines and that it has since been fixed. “With any piece of complicated machinery there are adjustments to the rollers, belts, and other pieces of equipment, and if the adjustments are not just right or out of spec, it may not run correctly," says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety and testing at Consumer Reports. "Sometimes, as in this case, that can result in a food safety issue."

    More on food safety

Kraft Heinz did not immediately respond to CR’s request for comment.

    The recalled packages are:
    • 16-oz. Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product (24-count) with a UPC of 0 2100061526 1 and a “Best When Used By” date of 10 JAN 24 through 27 JAN 24.

    • 3-lb. multipacks of Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product (72-count) with UPC of 0 2100060491 3 and a “Best When Used By” date of 09 JAN 2024 through 13 JAN 2024 and 16 JAN 2024.

If you have a package that’s been recalled, return it to the store where you bought it for a refund or exchange.

Contact Kraft Heinz to see if your products have been recalled or if you have any other questions from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday at 800-280-8252.
