Nearly 100 people have been sickened by salmonella in an outbreak linked to eggs produced by Country Eggs, a California company.

The company has recalled two brands sold at retail of its large, brown, cage-free, Golden Yolk eggs with omega-3: Mizuho and Nijiya Markets. The eggs were shipped to stores in California and Nevada. The cartons are marked with code No. CA 7695 and a sell-by date between July 1 and Sept. 18, 2025. Eggs from Nagatoshi Produce and Country Eggs, two other brands that were shipped only to food service facilities, have also been recalled.

    More on Food Safety

Eggs sold under the Nijiya brand name are available at Nijiya Markets. Mizuho eggs are sold at 99 Ranch Market, an Asian supermarket chain, according to Marty Zaritsky, LLC manager at Country Eggs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 95 people from 14 states have been sickened by the outbreak strain of salmonella. The states are: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Washington. Eighteen people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. The illnesses occurred between Jan. 7 and July 26, 2025.

Zaritsky says that the company doesn’t yet know how the eggs became contaminated, but it is working with the Food and Drug Administration to find out. “As soon as the FDA informed us that our eggs could be involved in the outbreak, we placed all production on hold,” he says. “We have pulled the product and are having it tested.”

“This outbreak is a reminder that raw or undercooked eggs can make people sick,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food and product safety research and testing at Consumer Reports. “The fact that eggs are often a source of salmonella is why they are on CR’s riskiest food list.”

If you have any of these eggs, you should throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them for a refund. But Rogers says that you should take steps to protect yourself from salmonella whenever you buy eggs. “Open the carton in the store to make sure none of the eggs are cracked. Bacteria on the shell could be transferred to the inside of the egg,” he says. “And to kill the bacteria, cook eggs until both the yolk and the white are firm.”

    Symptoms of Salmonella

Salmonella sickens an estimated 1.35 million people every year. It causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps anywhere from 6 hours to six days after exposure, according to the CDC. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and usually resolves without treatment. However, some people may become so ill that they require hospitalization.

Call a doctor if you have a fever higher than 102° F, if you have diarrhea that doesn’t improve in three days, or if you have bloody stools. Dehydration is also possible and should be assessed by a doctor. Signs of dehydration include dry mouth and throat, dizziness when standing, and making very little urine.
