Nearly 160,000 Pounds of Shrimp Sold at Kroger and Other Stores Recalled for Possible Radioactive Contamination
This is the fifth time this year shrimp has been taken off the market for the same reason
Seafood wholesaler Aqua Star is recalling about 85,000 2-pound and 1.25-pound bags of frozen and raw shrimp sold at retailers like Kroger and Ralphs due to possible radioactive contamination.
It’s the latest in a series of shrimp recalls stemming from the detection of the radioactive isotope Cesium-137 in shipping containers. The previous announcements occurred in August and involved other Aqua Star products, as well as certain shrimp sold under the Walmart and Arctic Shore brands, among others.

The bags of shrimp were sold in these 31 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
If you’ve purchased any of these recalled shrimp products, don’t eat them. Throw them away or return them to the store where you purchased them for a full refund, Aqua Star said in a press release.
Repeated exposure to even low levels of radioactive material can increase the risk of cancer caused by damage to DNA in the body’s cells. The Food and Drug Administration says it has not received any illness reports connected to any of the recalled shrimp products, and none have tested positive for Cesium-137 at this time.
The FDA continues to investigate and will post more information as it becomes available.
Consumers with questions about the shrimp recall can call Aqua Star at 800-331-3440, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
