Organic Basil Sold at Trader Joe’s Recalled Due to Salmonella

A dozen people have become ill; one person was hospitalized

Trader Joe’s has recalled 2.5-ounce packages of Infinite Herbs Organic Basil after it was linked to an outbreak of salmonella that sickened 12 people, one of whom was hospitalized. People who became sick were located in Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.

The recalled products were sold between Feb. 1, 2024, and April 6, 2024, and are marked with UPC code 8 18042 02147 7.

The recalled basil was sold in Trader Joe’s stores in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. It was also shipped to two Fruit Center Marketplace stores in Massachusetts.

Infinite Herbs also issued a second recall for Melissa’s brand fresh organic basil in 2-ounce (UPC 0 45255 14142 9) and 4-ounce packages (UPC 0 45255 14439 0) sold at Dierberg’s stores in Illinois and Missouri between Feb. 10 and 20, 2024.

    More on food safety

Infinite Herbs did not immediately respond to CR’s questions about how the basil may have become contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration says that Trader Joe’s has removed all the recalled basil from store shelves. If you have it in your fridge or freezer, throw it out or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund.

“Even though basil is often used raw in small amounts in salads or other uncooked foods, it does not take ingesting many salmonella bacteria to make you sick,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of product and food safety research and testing at CR.

And in order to keep your kitchen safe, Rogers says, if you do have the recalled basil, wash any countertops, refrigerator shelves or drawers, cutting boards, and other surfaces that might have come into contact with it using hot soapy water.

    Risk of Salmonella

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever of 102° F or higher, severe vomiting to the point you can’t keep liquids down, and dehydration. The symptoms can begin between 6 hours and six days after ingesting the bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people recover in about a week, but if these symptoms last for more than three days, it’s time to call your doctor or other healthcare provider.
