Pancake Mix Sold at Walmart and Kroger Is Recalled

The products may contain pieces of a cable from processing line machinery

Walmart Great Value Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix and Kroger Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix Source: FDA

The manufacturer of Walmart and Kroger store-branded pancake and waffle mixes has issued a recall. The company, Continental Mills, found fragments of a cable that’s part of the machinery used on the processing line in some of the products. No injuries have been reported, and there have been no complaints from consumers.

A Continental Mills spokesperson, Dana Ross, told CR its “food safety systems did detect the fragments, and out of an abundance of caution we took action to ensure the product was identified and pulled from store shelves.”

    More on food safety

    The recalled products are:

Great Value Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix, 2 lbs., (Walmart) with UPC 078742370828, lot code KX2063, and a “best by” date of 09/01/2023. The mix was sold at Walmart stores nationwide.

Kroger Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix, 2 lbs., with UPC 01111088219, lot code of either KX2063 or KX2064, and a “best by” date of 09/01/2023 or 09/02/2023. Recalled products were sold at Kroger stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

“Pieces of conveyor belts, plastic-coated cables, and other parts of machinery can contaminate food if they fail during the packaging and manufacturing process,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety research and testing at Consumer Reports.

If you have any of these recalled products, throw them away, Rogers says. Or return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

Consumers with questions can contact Continental Mill’s Recall Phone Hotline at 800-578-7832 Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT.
