Major U.S. chicken producer Perdue Foods LLC has issued a recall of over 167,000 pounds of frozen, breaded chicken nuggets and tenders, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The recalled products, which were shipped to stores nationwide and sold online directly to consumers, are:

    • Butcher Box Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets, Gluten Free: with UPC Bar Code 0-72745-80648-3 and a “best if used by date” of 03-23-25 on the back of the package.

    • Perdue Chicken Breast Tenders: 29-ounce packages, with UPC Bar Code 0-72745-80431-1 and a “best if used by date” of 03-23-25 on the back of the package.

    • Perdue Simply Smart Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets, Gluten Free: 22-ounce packages, with UPC Bar Code 0-72745-80656-8 and “best if used by” date of 03-23-25 on the back of the package.

    More on Food Safety

Perdue notified the USDA and recalled the products after consumers reported finding metal wire in the breaded chicken. “There were three consumer complaints prior to our voluntary recall and there have been no reports of illnesses or injuries associated with the product,” said Andrea Staub, a spokesperson for Perdue Foods.

If you have these products in your freezer, throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them for a refund. “Don’t take the chance. You usually can’t tell whether something is in there just by looking at the food,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety research and testing at Consumer Reports. In this case, Perdue determined “the material to be a very thin strand of metal wire,” the company said in a statement.

“Although no one has been hurt in this situation, biting into food that contains metal or other foreign matter, like pieces of plastic or rubber, may cause injury. The materials can be choking hazards, or cause mouth lacerations, digestive issues, and other problems,” Rogers says.

This is the sixth time this year that meat and poultry products have been recalled because foreign materials were found in the food, according to the USDA.
