Two people have been hospitalized due to illness. The FDA and CDC are investigating the outbreak.

In early August, six flavors of Soft Serve On The Go ice cream and sorbet were recalled by Real Kosher Ice Cream of Brooklyn, N.Y., because the products could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Now, Brooklyn-based Ice Cream House is recalling nearly 100 ice cream and sorbet products for the same reason. Both companies’ products were produced at the same facility, the Food and Drug Administration said.

    More on Food Safety

The Soft Serve On The Go products were linked to two cases of listeria infection, one in New York and one in Pennsylvania, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Both people were hospitalized. According to the FDA, the people who became ill said they ate Soft Serve On The Go Vanilla Chocolate ice cream. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture obtained an unopened cup of the ice cream from one person’s home and tested it. It was positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The Ice Cream House and Real Kosher Ice Cream did not immediately respond to CR’s request for comment.

What to Know About the Ice Cream House Recall

All of products the company makes, 91 in total, have been recalled. These include ice cream cakes, pies, and novelties as well as quarts of ice cream and sorbet. Most of the products are packed in clamshells or cake trays with plastic covers and all carry a label with the Ice Cream House logo. (See below.)

The products were sold in Ice Cream House stores in Brooklyn and at retail stores in New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. They are no longer being produced or shipped.

If you have questions, contact the Ice Cream House by email at ICHrecall@gmail.com. Or call 845-445-7644, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.

What to Know About the Soft Serve On The Go Recall

The recalled flavors—Vanilla Chocolate, Razzle, Caramel, Parve Vanilla Chocolate, Sorbet Strawberry Mango, and Lite Peanut Butter—were produced up to Aug. 4, 2023. They’re packaged in 8-ounce clear plastic cups with a spoon attached.

The FDA has posted a list of UPC codes; the UPC is the only identifiable marker on the package.

The products were sold in grocery and convenience stores in 19 states—California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia—and the District of Columbia.

Anyone with questions about the recall should call Real Kosher Ice Cream at 845-668-4346, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, or send an email to info@softserveonthego.com.

What You Should Know About Listeria

Because ice cream has such a long shelf life, check your freezer for any recalled product, says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety and testing at CR. “Listeria can survive freezing temperatures, so if you have any, throw it out, or return it for a refund," he says.

Most people aren’t likely to become seriously ill from listeria. But about 260 of the estimated 1,600 people who get listeriosis (the illness caused by listeria) each year die, according to the CDC. Those with the highest risk of adverse consequences are pregnant people, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever and diarrhea. A more serious infection can cause muscle aches, headaches, a stiff neck, confusion, a loss of balance, and convulsions. These can occur between a week and four weeks after eating food contaminated with the bacteria. A listeria infection can also cause a miscarriage or stillbirth, or the death of a newborn.
