The Palmer Candy Company has recalled 29 snacks and confections with a white candy coating because they may be contaminated with salmonella. The products—which include yogurt-covered pretzels, white-fudge cookies, and snack mixes—were sold at Walmart, Target, Dollar General, and HyVee stores throughout the U.S. No illnesses have been reported.

    More on food safety

Palmer was informed by its supplier that the candy coating might be tainted with salmonella. The company stopped production of the products and is investigating the problem along with the Food and Drug Administration. Palmer didn’t immediately respond to CR’s questions about whether the products were still being sold and if any other retailers besides those listed might also carry them.

The products, listed below, come in a variety of packaging, such as tubs, bags, pouches, and cups. Some have “best by” dates as far out as April 2025. If you have any of these recalled products, throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

    Risks of Salmonella

The most common symptoms—diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps—can occur up to six days after eating contaminated food, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In some cases, the infection can spread beyond the gut and potentially cause arterial infection, endocarditis, and arthritis. It can even be deadly. Children under the age of 5, adults over the age of 65, and anyone with a weakened immune system due to, say, receiving cancer treatments are especially at risk for severe infection. Warning signs of a severe infection include diarrhea and a fever of 102° F or higher; bloody diarrhea; diarrhea that doesn’t improve after several days; the inability to keep liquids down; or severe dehydration (you aren’t urinating much, have a dry mouth, or feel dizzy upon standing). Anyone with these symptoms should contact a doctor.
