The average American spends 6.5 hours a day sitting. I work from home and probably clock in even more sedentary hours than that, so I’m not here to pass judgment. But I am thrilled to be able to help, because even the most comfortable and ergonomic office chair finds a formidable opponent in the body’s aches and pains. That’s where a quality chair massager comes in.

There are two primary types: One reclines fully and is used while lying on the floor or other flat surface—we tested those in our labs and among a panel of evaluators—and you’ll find our top picks for flat massage mats here. To test four popular chair massagers, we enlisted the help of CR’s José Amézquita, who tested them in our labs (all weights and most measurements were also independently tested), and a panel of 11 CR testers who performed real-world evaluations. Our testers ranged in height from 4’9” to 6’2”, and tested each pad for comfort, effectiveness, noise, and ease of use. All of these chair massagers were easy to set up and featured Velcro straps to keep them attached securely to our office chairs.

Here are our top three picks, plus details on why one popular brand’s model didn’t make the cut.

A panel of 11 testers evaluated four chair massagers for comfort, ease of use, how effectively they soothed muscle pain, and whether they were noisy.
