    Cribs

A crib is one of the most important purchases you’ll make as you prepare for your new baby. Most of the cribs we test in our labs are convertible, meaning they can be converted from a crib into a toddler bed, although some cribs convert into twin beds, daybeds, and full-sized beds as well, with additional conversion kits (usually sold separately).

Rest assured that all cribs sold in the U.S. must meet federally regulated safety standards, so if you’re using a new crib, the manufacturer must comply with the most recent safety regulations. Below, check out two of our top picks for convertible and travel cribs, and learn more about how to know your crib is safe.

The Abigail 3 in 1 Convertible Crib won over our testers, thanks to its sturdy steel construction and simple assembly. We also liked the under-$600 price. “This well-constructed metal crib converts into a toddler bed and a daybed, serving your child well into their school years,” says Joan Muratore, who oversees testing of baby products at Consumer Reports. It’s heavy-duty, making it a solid choice if you’re looking for a crib to last through a few siblings. Just make sure you get extra help if you need to move it around.

    Travel Crib

    BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

    BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

The BabyBjörn earned the highest marks in our study of the best play yards, though its setup and takedown may take some getting used to. Unlike play yards that are elevated, the BabyBjörn sits flat on the ground—a plus for when your kid gets bigger because it means there’s no upper weight limit. (The downside of this particular feature is that it may be difficult for some parents, especially those on the petite side or with a tender C-section scar, to place or retrieve their child from the play yard.) It’s worth noting, however, that like all pack-and-plays, this one has a limited lifespan and your child will eventually outgrow this sleep space. BabyBjörn recommends using it only until your child turns 3, until they reach a height of 35 inches (890 mm), or can climb out, a skill some children master earlier than others.

    Crib Mattresses

We evaluated the materials in 12 crib mattresses to help you find the safest and most sustainable options for your baby. These are our three top choices, made from materials with no known risks, listed alphabetically.

    Bassinets

The best long-term choice for your baby is a crib, but bassinets can provide a safe and convenient sleep environment, especially during the early months. (Learn more about when to transition your baby to a crib and other bassinet safety tips). Below, a few of the best traditional bassinetsbest smart and soothing bassinets, and best portable bassinets

The BabyBjorn Baby Cradle won over our testers, thanks to its category-spanning versatility. It’s a lo-fi, traditional bassinet, but it features a gentle rocking motion, and its lightweight profile means it could also fit well in our portable bassinet category. The bassinet folds down flat to a height of 5 inches, making it simple for storage, transport, or travel, and the legs can be easily removed with the help of an Allen wrench.

One thing to note is that while the bouncing motion is very gentle, you can’t lock it in place if you’d like it to be stationary. This bassinet also has a slightly lower weight limit than others we tested, maxing out at 18 pounds.

This smart and chic Maxi-Cosi Starling Smart Bassinet can detect your baby’s cry and automatically respond with five natural soothing motions and five sounds. When we tested the sound options at max volume, we found that the volume ranged from 51 to 63 decibels (dB). The AAP recommends that sound machines be kept at 50 dB or lower, so use the quieter settings to stay below the limit.

The connected app enables you to control the bassinet remotely, speak to your baby with two-way talk, and even set customized “scenes” so you can store and recall the specific settings that work best for your little one. The Starling also features CryAssist, an optional AI-powered feature that helps distinguish between your baby’s cries (sleep vs. hunger, gas vs. fussiness)—after all, crying is communication. Our testers found that the Maxi-Cosi Starling Smart Bassinet was easy to assemble, though it’s heavier than most other models we tested, which limits its portability.

The Iora Bedside bassinet would do very well in many new parents’ homes. It’s easy to set up and can be broken down without tools and fitted into a carrying bag for easy transport. This outstanding bassinet is also roomy and feature-rich. It has a large storage basket, where a pack of diapers, several changes of clothes, or a short stack of burp cloths will easily fit. Five height positions allow the bassinet to be the ideal position for caregivers, and it can be moved closer to the mattress via sliders. Five neutral-toned colorways ensure seamless integration into your decor.

    Weight: 23 pounds
Dimensions: 38 inches long, 26 inches wide, and 36 inches high
Use limit: Up to 20 pounds, or when infant begins to push up on hands and knees or roll over, whichever comes first

    Pacifiers

Our team of scientists recently tested 20 brand-name and store-brand baby pacifiers for potentially dangerous chemicals and choking hazards, and found that most pacifiers passed our tests with flying colors, including the three picks below.

    Baby Monitors

The Maxi-Cosi See Pro 360 Baby Monitor tops our ratings for a reason. It’s a hybrid monitor that supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi bands, can be connected to multiple cameras, and comes with a receiver unit. The camera can be mounted on a wall or placed on a tabletop, and the unit delivers excellent video resolution, two-way talk capabilities, remote pan and tilt, and 4x digital zoom. The software is compatible with iOS 10.0 or later, iPhone, iPad, and Android 64-bit devices, Android 7.0 or later.

In addition to basic features, the Maxi Cosi See Pro 360 provides room temperature and humidity detection; motion, sound, and crying detection; and sleep trends. It’s compatible with multiple cameras with a split-screen view, and it plays music and ambient sounds. One drawback is that this monitor doesn’t come with cable guards, so you may have to purchase them separately when your little one reaches the cord-eating phase. (Yes, it’s coming.)

The HelloBaby 6-Inch IPS Baby Monitor HB6560 is a non-WiFi monitor that allows you to connect to two cameras and view both simultaneously on a split-screen display. The rechargeable parent unit features one of the largest displays we tested, measuring 6 inches, and an IPS screen, which allows for clear viewing from various angles. It also has a remote pan/tilt function and 2x digital zoom, brightness and volume adjustments, a 1,000-foot range, and a claimed battery life of 16 to 30 hours, which we found to be accurate. In our tests, this model scored highest for battery life, with an average of 22 hours of run time on always-on mode. This model also features additional benefits that parents may appreciate, including room temperature readings and alerts, music and white noise, feeding timers, and 150 language options.

    Nursery Extras

Along with all the sleep necessities above, there are a few nursery extras that can help make your baby’s sleep routine a restful one, including a trusty humidifier and a reliable overnight diaper.

The ultrasonic Babymoov Hygro (+), designed for small rooms of up to 215 square feet, is top-rated for a reason: It shines in every one of CR’s tests. It’s easy to use, according to our evaluators, and emits enough moisture to sufficiently humidify a small room. Features include a night-light that cycles through a rainbow of colors, automatic shutoff when the tank is empty, and a timer, as well as the option to diffuse aromas. One drawback: The 58-inch cord is on the short side.

The Hello Bello Overnight Diapers were high performers in our tests of overnight diapers, excelling in absorption speed and dryness.

The diapers are hypoallergenic and made without lotions, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, parabens, latex, chlorine processing, harmful odor inhibitors, gluten, and soy, according to the manufacturer; however, we didn’t verify these claims. The diapers come in size 3 (for babies weighing 14 to 24 pounds) to size 6 (35 pounds and up). You can purchase a subscription for diapers and wipes for $79.99 on Hello Bello’s website.

    Unsafe Products to Avoid
It’s important to keep in mind that there are some products marketed for babies that we recommend avoiding. These include bumpers, loungers, sleep positioners, inclined sleepers, and pillows of any kind, as well as nursing pillows for infant sleep.

Make sure to also follow these safe sleep guidelines, no matter where your baby is sleeping:

    • Always place your baby down on their back in their own sleeping space, with no other people or pets.
    • Babies should sleep on a firm, flat—not inclined—surface. Inclines of 10 degrees or greater can restrict your baby’s airflow.
    • Use only a fitted sheet in your baby’s sleeping space.
    • Keep toys, blankets, bumpers, pillows or nursing pillows, baby loungers, sleep positioners, and other items out of the bassinet. These items can potentially suffocate your baby. (Bumpers, in fact, are banned under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act.)
    • Do not use weighted sleep sacks.
    • If your baby falls asleep in a child car seat, a stroller, a swing, or an infant carrier, you should move them to a firm sleep surface on their back as soon as possible.
    • If you decide to use the white noise or sound features available on some of the bassinets we reviewed, use the lowest possible setting for a brief time, and if possible, position your baby’s head on the opposite side of the bassinet from where the speaker is placed.
