Candle lamps can provide nice “throw,“ or scent strength, as well as soft lighting. But don't be fooled into thinking that they—or candle warmers—can make your candles last forever.

Scented candles are a great year-round gift and home enhancement. Recent data from Mintel shows that sales of one of the most popular candle brands, Yankee Candle, increased by 13.4 percent in a single year alone. As a true candle lover myself, I can attest to how expensive they can get, and every time I put a match to a wick, it feels too much like lighting money on fire. And if you’ve ever awakened in the middle of the night to find a burning candle, as I have, then you also understand the potential dangers. Could warmers be the answer to all of these concerns?

I also consulted Lindsay Silberman, founder of Hotel Lobby Candle, to learn more about whether the perceived benefits of using them are real and whether candle lamps and warmers present other safety concerns that consumers may not have considered. It goes without saying that with all lamps, you shouldn’t touch the bulbs—and in some cases, the actual shades—because they can get quite hot. I was mostly skeptical but somewhat hopeful, vowing that if I found even one impressive pick, I’d put my risky wick-burning ways behind me for good.
