Grout is a funny thing. Most of us don’t give it much thought until one day we notice it’s dirty or so dingy that it brings down the appearance of a bathroom or kitchen. Refurbishing rooms isn’t in everyone’s budget, but there’s a relatively inexpensive Plan B that can brighten dull grout and give rooms a facelift in no time: grout pens.

Grout pens, which are sometimes called grout markers, sound like what they are: you can use them to deposit permanent color into grout to deepen and enliven its natural hue, cover stains and discoloration, or change the grout’s color entirely. They come in different colors and tip sizes that correspond to the width of your grout, and the best ones deposit an even, consistent color that won’t rub off after cleaning or walking on tile and grout, and have tips that won’t fray or flatten quickly.

We tested six grout pen brands in black, beige, and white on real grout, including trying the black and beige pens on my own bathroom grout at home. The pens are not cleaning tools, and they should only be used on clean grout. We made sure to scrub the grout with CR’s top-rated grout cleaner and let it dry before testing. Here are the pens we loved—and the ones we loved a little less.

Using a grout pen requires a steady hand and a damp cloth nearby to quickly wipe up any mistakes in case you accidentally color the tile. Remember to clean your grout well before using a pen.
