Just a decade ago, many Americans considered bidets to be a quirky fixture of bathrooms abroad. But no more. Bidet sales stateside are now surging, as more and more people recognize the cleanliness and cost-saving benefits of this tush-cleaning tech.
“If you’ve never used a bidet, you might not realize just how easy they are to use or install,” says Michael Sedlak, who evaluates bidets in CR’s labs. “Plus, as converts report, once you’re used to feeling cleaner and saving money on TP, it’s hard to go back.”
And yet most of us looking to buy a bidet are doing so for the very first time. That makes shopping trickier. Do you prioritize grade-A water pressure or premium features, like heated water? Do you need a model that’s a cinch to install yourself?

Bidet Features That Matter Most
The best bidet attachments in our ratings not only offer plenty of cleaning power but also are easy to install and use daily. Here are some key features to consider as you shop.
Dual cleaning nozzles: Bidets aren’t just for your bum. Some models have dual cleaning nozzles that spray at different angles—typically one front-facing feminine wash and another for your rear. Some models have a single adjustable nozzle instead.
Electric or manual: Lower-cost bidet attachments rely on water pressure instead of electricity, so they don’t require a power outlet—just connection to the water line. (The models in our ratings are all manual, not electric.) If you want the full range of luxury features—such as on-demand water heating, warm air drying, and automated lid closure—you’ll want to consider an electric bidet seat instead. These require access to a plug and typically cost more.
Heated water option: A cool spray might be refreshing . . . or downright startling, depending on the time of day and temperature in your home. Not every bidet offers a warm water option. (Only a couple of the attachments that we’ve tested do.) This luxury spec is more commonly found on the higher-priced electric bidet seats. If you opt for a warm water model, make sure your bathroom layout allows you to hook the bidet up to the warm water line, which is likely to be under the sink, or heats the water electrically.
Self-cleaning nozzle: Every model in our ratings features a self-cleaning nozzle that rinses itself with water before each use. This is important for maintaining safety and hygiene. However, not every model on the market does this. Note also that this feature doesn’t replace regular manual cleaning of the bidet attachment.
Easy-to-use controls: For a tool you’re likely to use daily, the controls need to be easy to access and as customizable as possible. Some bidet attachments have easy-to-turn knobs, while others are more difficult to grip or more complex in design. Some bidet controls also allow you to adjust the water pressure or spray direction.
Tips for Bidet Installation
Installing a bidet attachment can be a bit of a project, especially if you’re not particularly handy, but it’s unlikely that you’ll need to hire someone for the job.
Many attachments come partially or fully preassembled, reducing setup time. However, you’ll always need to turn off the water valve to your toilet, fully remove or loosen your toilet seat to slide the attachment into place between the seat and the bowl, and then attach the bidet and tighten it. Positioning the attachment so the spray nozzles line up correctly can take a few adjustments, though clear instructions and alignment guides can help.
All bidet attachments connect to the same cold water line that fills your toilet tank. Some models also offer a hot water hookup, but that requires access to your sink’s hot water supply, which isn’t always conveniently located near the toilet. (Some electric bidet seats heat water themselves, so don’t require this additional step.) All the bidet attachments in our ratings are manual, so they don’t need to be plugged in.
How CR Tests Bidet Attachments
As with CR’s toilet testing, crafting a testing protocol that mimics real life takes some creativity. Let’s get into the nitty-gritty!
To test the most important metric—the ability to clean effectively—CR experts lather Nutella spread on clear plexiglass panels to simulate solid waste. After running the bidet’s water against the panel for thirty seconds on the highest setting, our testers use a computer program to visually analyze the amount of glass exposed and thus how effectively the bidet cleaned. The highest-scoring models remove the most material from the glass, proving they have the cleaning power to rely on daily.
Easy-to-use controls are also essential. We give the highest score on this metric to the bidets with easy-to-grip controls that offer convenience and customization, like water pressure and spray direction adjustments.
The models that score the highest on ease of installation come preassembled and can be mounted to the toilet without needing to fully remove the seat. Other pluses (or annoyances) during installation affect the score, too. For example, some models come with helpful alignment guides for properly positioning the bidet against the back of the toilet rim. This reduces the amount of manual adjustment during setup.
