You’ve got your sleep hygiene in tip-top shape and you’re getting plenty of zzz’s, right? Great! But you’ll sleep even better if you employ the bedroom spring cleaning tips Consumer Reports lays out below.

Between dust on the ceiling fan and window coverings, dead skin and hair in the seams of your mattress and pillow, and pink slime growing in the humidifier, performing these spring cleaning tasks can also help limit your morning allergies. Better yet, you can do each of them in under 20 minutes, which gives you even more time to enjoy those sweet dreams.

    Clean the Blinds and Curtains

Is your view of budding trees impeded by dusty blinds? Put on cotton gloves and swipe your fingers along the blinds to clean them. Do this before opening up your windows for the warmer season.

If there’s no time to wash the curtains, dust them off by running them through the dryer set to the no-heat or delicate cycle. You can also lay them on a bed and vacuum them using a soft brush attachment. If your vacuum has it, use a reduced-suction setting so that it doesn’t pull the fabric into the nozzle. If you’re experiencing problems with that, one way to prevent it from happening is to secure an old pantyhose over the nozzle with a rubber band.

    Clean the Ceiling Fan

You could buy a special tool—a long-handled, U-shaped brush—from the hardware store to clean your ceiling fan, but if you have a ladder or you’re tall enough to reach it, you could simply wipe the fan’s blades and housing with a damp cloth and an all-purpose cleaner. Another trick you can use is to slip an old pillowcase over the blades one by one, then pull it back to remove dust and dirt. The sack helps to contain all the loose dust. And if this is a chore you loathe, try coating the blades with car wax to prevent dust from sticking in the first place.

    Vacuum the Mattress

Freshen up your mattress at least twice a year by vacuuming it with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

    More on Spring Cleaning

Switch to the crevice attachment to clear out the seams and crevices, where dirt, dust, and dead skin collect. If you find a stain, follow our step-by-step instructions for removing any mattress stains—from blood and urine to mud and poop.

Next, give the mattress a whiff. If it needs it, deodorize by sprinkling baking soda over the entire surface of the mattress. If it’s well before bedtime, leave the baking soda to absorb odors (for up to 24 hours), then vacuum it up.

You might also consider cleaning or replacing your mattress topper, in addition to regular cleanings and replacements for your sheets and comforter sets. You can wash many of these bedding linens with the washer and dryer you already have. For bigger comforter sets, a trip to the laundromat may be in order.

    Freshen Up the Pillows

Hair, dead skin cells, sweat, and drool build up on your pillow, which attracts dust mites. For this reason, add cleaning your pillow to your list of spring chores. If you’re short on time (they can take hours to dry) and already use a pillow protector, freshen up your pillows by hanging them outdoors on a clothesline on a bright, breezy day, or toss them in the dryer on the no-heat cycle. Add the pillow covers and protectors to your regular laundry duties too.

    Clean the Humidifier

Your humidifier worked hard all winter, preventing your skin and eyes from drying out. Give it a deep cleaning before storing it away for the season by following these three steps.

    1. Remove the tank from the base and add either 1 cup of white distilled vinegar or ½ cup each of vinegar and water into the base. Use the cleaning tool that came with the humidifier to scrub off any scale in the well and clean the crevices.
    2. Pour 1 cup each of vinegar and water into the tank, cap it, and let it soak for 20 minutes, swishing or shaking periodically.
    3. Rinse everything until it no longer smells of vinegar and let all parts dry thoroughly.
