Why do we love gas grills? For starters, they’re just super-convenient. Turn on the burners, and by the time you’ve unwrapped the buns, you’re ready to begin cooking your burgers. There’s none of the fuss of starting a charcoal fire.

More on Grilling

And while manufacturers like to categorize grills by the number of burners, at CR, we take a more practical approach: how many burgers can a grill cook? Small gas grills can typically hold 18 or fewer patties at once; midsized gas grills can accommodate 18 to 28; and large gas grills can fit 28 or more.

The question of which brand makes the best gas grills is tougher to answer. CR’s engineers test hundreds of cooking appliances in our labs each year. In fact, there are currently more than 150 models in our gas grill ratings alone. If you’re shopping for a new one, start there and get lots of model-specific information. But what if we haven’t tested the gas grill you’re considering? In that case, our gas grill brand scores can be a big help.

To determine which brands make the best grills, CR created a statistical model that incorporates the Overall Scores for every model in our ratings. Our calculations reflect lab performance and feature selection, plus predicted reliability and owner satisfaction scores derived from surveying members who’ve purchased a grill. We also look at prices: Brands get credit for delivering high performance and reliability at a lower cost than their competitors.

While some larger, feature-packed gas grills cost more than $3,000, you will find high-performing options in our ratings priced at $500 or less. The models we recommend heat up quickly, distribute heat evenly (including during indirect cooking), and offer a wide temperature range (from very low to very high). They also score well for owner satisfaction and, yes, durability.

To be eligible for consideration in the Best Brands analysis, a manufacturer must have at least three models listed in our ratings chart and receive a favorable score from CR members in predicted reliability (3 or better on the 5-point scale or greater than 40 on the 100-point scale).
