If you don’t own the apartment you live in, making major changes to the look of the place isn’t really an option. Even if you do own your home and can make any changes you’d like to your space, renovating a kitchen can be expensive. And replacing old appliances when they still work isn’t really a cost-effective or environmentally friendly solution either.

When a friend mentioned a video they’d seen of someone refreshing their kitchen cabinets using vinyl wraps—adhesive films you apply to appliances, furniture, cars, and more to change their color—I thought I’d found a viable solution for us all to revamp our kitchens. I was inspired. Sure, wrapping a refrigerator looked easy enough when someone else was doing it, but would I find the same success? As a DIY newbie, I worried that this would be too difficult to do on my own, so I pitched trying a few options in our lab to find the best ones for beginners.

We purchased seven vinyl wraps—three for wrapping cabinets and four for refrigerators. Over a week, we applied and removed each one, noting how easy it was, whether it damaged or left any residue on the surfaces applied, and whether it lifted when exposed to high heat or moisture.

Sneak Peek: None of these vinyl wraps was totally foolproof, but the good news is we were able to narrow it down to a few that, with some practice, are good for beginners. The even better news is that none of the models lifted when we applied heat with a hair dryer or sprayed water along the edges of the vinyl, and they did not cause any damage to the surfaces we applied them to.
