We Tested Command Strips and Other Products to Hang Frames and Shelves

Some of these adhesive hooks and strips can be a renter-friendly way to mount frames, but we found that mounting shelves was a big fail

Most of the adhesive strips and hooks fared well with small, light items, but we wouldn't recommend them for mounting heavy things to walls.

As a renter, I try to avoid damaging the walls in my apartment as much as I can. I’ve never made a hole in my wall; instead, I opt for adhesive strips when I need to mount something. Unfortunately, this has not entirely saved my walls from damage, as I nearly always ruin the paint during the removal process. Worse still, I’ve had many items land on the floor in pieces in the middle of the night, just a few days after installation.

Command is arguably the best-known maker of these products, but it isn’t the only option. We tested products from The Original Super Glue, Gorilla, FrogTape, and Scotch alongside products from Command. We tested them for their ease of installation and removal, and their ability to remain on painted walls overnight while holding a picture frame with weights and a shelf. Although mounting a shelf with these strips is generally not recommended by their manufacturers, we used them in this way to test their performance in a more extreme, yet probable, misuse scenario. We also noted whether they were reusable after removal.

What we found was that none of these strips and hooks should be used to mount shelves or other heavy items. Even if the item you’re hanging is within the weight limit claimed by one of these models, it could fail if the item is too large in size. A picture frame is the only thing we’d recommend mounting with the strips we tested.

Hijinks ensued when we tested these products in our lab.
