More Than 55,000 Avocado Mattress Pads Recalled Due to Fire Risk
The organic cotton mattress toppers violate federal flammability standards
Avocado has recalled about 55,480 organic cotton mattress pads because they violate mandatory federal flammability regulations, posing a fire hazard.
The recall was announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and applies to a specific mattress pad with the model number SFMPAVORG. The mattress pad was sold in both standard and deep-pocket versions and in every standard mattress size. Avocado has not received any reports of incidents or injuries.
Consumer Reports has tested many Avocado products, including mattresses and mattress toppers, but we have not tested this particular model.
It’s important to note that while Consumer Reports does not perform its own flammability testing, federal standards exist for all products of this type. "Mattresses and associated products must pass the stringent flammability requirements set by the CPSC," says Chris Regan, who oversees mattress testing at Consumer Reports. "That’s because the mattress and any associated bedding are the biggest fuel sources for a potential fire in a bedroom. Any products found to be in violation of the federal flammability standards should be replaced with urgency."
