Generac Portable Generators Recalled Due to Serious Fire and Burn Risks
The fuel tank on about 64,000 generators can fail to ventilate properly, resulting in a build-up of pressure that can expel gasoline when the tank is opened
Generac has recalled about 64,000 portable generators because their fuel tank can fail to vent adequately. As a result, pressure can build inside the tank and cause fuel to spray onto the user when the tank is opened, posing both fire and burn hazards.
Details of the Generator Recall
The recall: About 64,000 Generac portable generators. The recall includes two unit types spanning eight models. They include unit GP15000E, models G0057341, G0057342, 005734R1, 005734R2; and unit GP17500E, models G0057351, G0057352, 005735R1, and 005735R2.
The brand name, Generac, and the unit type, are printed on both sides of the tank and on the control panel of the generators. The model number is printed on a label on the heat shield between the engine and alternator. You can check this Generac recall page to see if your specific unit type and model number are included in this recall.
The risk: The fuel tank in the generator can fail to adequately ventilate, causing excessive pressure inside the fuel tank. When a user opens the tank, as they would to add more gasoline, hot fuel can expel, posing both fire and burn risks.
Incidents/injuries: Generac has received 27 reports of a tank overheating, over-pressurizing, or expelling fuel, including three reports of severe burns.
Where and when sold: Major home improvement and hardware stores nationwide and online, from April 2011 through June 2023 for $3,300 to $3,650.
The remedy: Stop using the recalled portable generator and contact Generac for a free repair kit.
