Outdoor power equipment manufacturer MTD Products today recalled about 6,200 riding mowers sold under the Craftsman and Troy-Bilt brand names.

The riding mowers can fail to come to a complete stop and continue to move at a speed of about 1 mile per hour when the clutch/brake pedal is fully depressed, posing a low-speed crash hazard.

The recall involves two models of the Craftsman 30" Mini riding mower, and three models of the Troy-Bilt TB30 riding mower, which were sold by Home Depot and Lowe’s—in-store and online—and at hardware stores nationwide.

The red and black riding mowers were sold for about $1,600 between July 2021 and January 2022. They were manufactured between July 20, 2021 and Dec. 17, 2021.

You’ll find the full list of affected model numbers and serial numbers in the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notice. To find the model and serial number on a riding mower, look on the model plate label on the bottom of the seat pan. The CPSC recall notice gives more detail on identifying the actual month and date your riding mower was manufactured.

Craftsman and Troy-Bilt are offering free inspections and repairs for these models. Have your model and serial number handy when you contact the company.

"Consumers will be assisted in contacting a local repair shop to have a replacement drive belt installed at no cost to the consumer. Pickup and delivery of the lawn mower will be arranged if necessary at no cost to the consumer," the CPSC’s recall notice says.

Consumer Reports has not tested either of these models.
