Stanley is recalling all 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the U.S. because the lids can detach when exposed to heat, posing a burn hazard.

Consumers should immediately stop using these travel mugs and contact Stanley for a free replacement lid, shipping included, according to the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Details of the Stanley Travel Mug Recall

The recall: The double-walled mugs have a polypropylene lid and are sold in a variety of colors, including white, black, and green. The Switchback is sold in 12-oz. and 16-oz. sizes. The Trigger Action is sold in 12-oz., 16-oz., and 20-oz. sizes.

To see if your mug is one of the recalled models, look for one of the product identification numbers shown below that are printed on the bottom. It should also have a Stanley logo that appears on the front and bottom.

    The recalled product identification numbers are Switchback 12-oz. (20-01437); Switchback 16-oz. (20-01436, 20-02211); Trigger Action 12-oz. (20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825); Trigger Action 16-oz. (20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957); and Trigger Action 20-oz. (20-02034, 20-02746).

The risk: When exposed to heat during usage, the mug’s lid threads can shrink and torque, causing the lid to detach, which could pose a burn hazard.

Incidents/injuries: Stanley has received 91 reports worldwide, including 16 in the U.S., of the recalled travel mug lids detaching during use. Thirty-eight burn injuries have been reported worldwide, including two in the U.S. In 11 cases, consumers required medical attention.

Where sold and when: The travel mugs were sold from June 2016 through December 2024 at Amazon, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, Walmart, and other retailers. They cost $20 to $50.

The remedy: Consumers should stop using these recalled travel mugs immediately and contact Stanley to receive a free replacement lid, shipping included.

Contact information: Call 866-792-5445 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or go to the Stanley recall page
