Water damage in a home is no joke. Whether it comes from a storm or a burst pipe, water can quickly destroy prized possessions and ruin flooring and drywall. Water damage and freezing were the cause of 23.5 percent of all insurance losses in 2021, according to the Insurance Information Institute, with the average claim from 2017 to 2021 costing over $12,000. But one way you can get an early warning about potential water damage—and hopefully limit it—is to use smart water leak detectors.

These small devices, which connect to the internet, can be placed in areas of your home that are prone to leaks or flooding, such as exposed pipes, damp basements, water heaters, and washing machines. As soon as their sensors detect water, they send an alert to your smartphone, and sometimes sound a siren, so you can investigate quickly.

I recently put seven water leak detectors to the test in my home. The detectors come from Aqara, D-Link, Eve, Kidde, Moen, Swann, and X-Sense. Many of them are fairly inexpensive, with all but one model costing less than $100 and three detectors costing less than $50.
