Five pairs of scissors on green and blue paper
CR's tests found significant differences among scissors, including how precisely they cut, the comfort of their handles, and the quality of their hinges.

No one really thinks about scissors. When you need a pair—and everyone always needs one—you probably root around in a drawer. And while using them, you probably think, “Have these scissors always been so bad?” The hinges stick and the handles hurt your fingers. Then, like every other busy person with more important things to think about, you toss them back in the drawer until the next time you need them. And the cycle of scissor abuse continues.

But what if I told you that CR tested nine pairs of scissors from popular brands like Fiskars, Kai, and Scotch, and that we wanted to toss more than half of them back in a drawer? You don’t have to settle for a rickety pair of scissors or a sore hand. You can own a pair of really great scissors that cut through most everyday items well and are a pleasure to use.

We tested our scissors with office paper, thicker posterboard, and even thicker Amazon cardboard boxes. We gladly tortured ourselves, cutting out asymmetrical shapes to see how precisely these blades could cut, and I tested them on assorted floral bouquet stems. Because we support the plight of left-handers everywhere, we recruited two left-handed CR staffers who haven’t used a left-handed scissor since grade school to pick their favorite scissors. (They agreed on the winner.) As a bonus, we gave our favorite first-grader, Eliana, six pairs of kids’ scissors to help you find the best one for your child.

Here are the scissors that were so good you might never misplace them again.
