If you’re not wearing cleaning gloves when you scrub your bathroom or wash dishes, you’re missing out on an opportunity to shield your skin from exposure to harsh chemicals like bleach and ammonia found in many cleaning products, as well as the drying effects of hot water. I like to keep two pairs of cleaning gloves around: one for washing dishes and another for scrubbing toilets, sinks, and other germ-ridden surfaces. But I have to admit I’ve never put much thought into the gloves I buy—whatever’s on sale worked for me.

It wasn’t until I started testing six pairs of cleaning gloves from brands like Mr. Clean, O-Cedar, and Casabella that I discovered there are major differences among them. Some feel so soft and cottony inside that I never wanted to take them off. Others were obviously more durable or featured drip-catch cuffs to better protect your arms. One popular cult brand even ripped while I was putting them on—don’t worry, we caught it on video.

In addition to testing each glove while washing dishes and cleaning the bathroom, we soaked them in Scrubbing Bubbles Foaming Bleach Bathroom Cleaner to see how well they handled chemical exposure. We also tested them in our labs with a force gauge to determine which were more vulnerable to punctures.

Here are our top four cleaning gloves, and more info on why two products didn’t make our cut.
