YONKERS, NY – Parents and caregivers who are shopping for baby products face an unwieldy marketplace filled with items that may boast dubious claims, and in many cases turn out to be unsafe. Consumer Reports (CR), the nonprofit research, testing, and advocacy organization, today launched a new initiative to provide parents with objective information they can use to make the best decisions about the safety, health and comfort of their children.
As part of CR’s new baby initiative, the organization has expanded its testing, ratings and coverage of children’s products and created a comprehensive digital hub designed to be a new go-to resource for everyone who cares for an infant or small child. Parents will find ratings on more than 1,000 expert-tested products—everything from car seats and strollers to sleep and nursery items, personal care products, feeding, and play.
“Parents face questions every day about the health, comfort, and safety of their little ones. While there are so many places to find information, not all of it is trustworthy or objective,” said Sara Morrow, Consumer Reports’ Director of Home & Baby Content Development, and a mother herself. “CR’s robust new baby offering includes expert advice, reliable recommendations and custom tools to help moms and dads gear up with ease, and focus on making memories that last a lifetime.”
CR believes so strongly in helping provide parents with peace of mind about the safety of their little ones that the organization is making its car seat ratings and recommendations available to all consumers. The organization is also introducing a new Infant Car Seat Finder that provides individualized recommendations that fit a consumer’s lifestyle, vehicles, and budget.
“All parents want the safest, most dependable products for their children. But the marketplace can be confusing, lacking in safeguards, and filled with faulty information,” said William Wallace, Associate Director of Safety Policy at Consumer Reports. “As a new parent, I’m especially struck by all the hazardous products on the market and the stores, websites, and apps that sell them. My team at CR focuses on holding companies and government agencies accountable so parents get the peace of mind they deserve.”
Rigorous and scientific testing has been CR’s hallmark for more than 87 years. The organization brings together the power of a deeply skilled team of technical staff, product experts, and advocates to assess performance, quality and safety. As always, CR independently purchases all the products it rates and does not accept free samples from manufacturers.
CR has built a reputation for exposing the truth and advocating for stronger safety standards. The organization reveals shortcomings in both food and product safety regulations through its testing and investigative work, and champions the consumer’s interest with policymakers. CR’s product testing has identified problems and triggered Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalls on at least 17 children’s products over the years—including inclined infant sleepers, bike helmets, car seats, high chairs, and strollers.
Founded in 1936, CR has a mission to create a fair and just marketplace for all. Widely known for our rigorous research and testing of products and services, we also survey millions of consumers each year, report extensively on marketplace issues, and advocate for consumer rights and protections around safety as well as digital rights, financial fairness, and sustainability. CR is independent and nonprofit.
