YONKERS, NY – Consumer Reports, the research, testing and advocacy organization, has been named on Fast Company’s 2024 list of Most Innovative Companies as an organization that is transforming business and society. CR was recognized in the Nonprofit category for its technological innovation to improve driver and pedestrian safety and to empower people to take back control of their data.
On CR’s new 1.5-mile multi-lane auto test loop at its state-of-the-art Auto Test Center in Colchester, Connecticut, CR is evaluating advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to push manufacturers to make lifesaving features standard, including Automatic Emergency Braking, a technology that can prevent injuries and fatalities. CR’s work in auto safety has made a significant impact: 88% of new mainstream and luxury cars for the 2023 model year come with AEB with pedestrian detection as standard. This rise from 38% in 2019 coincides with CR’s decision to give bonus points in ratings to cars that make this proven active safety feature standard and to require it for cars to receive its Top Pick designation.
CR’s launch of Permission Slip helps people regain control over their personal data in the opaque digital landscape. The mobile app developed by CR makes it easier for people to understand what data is being collected about them and to tell companies to delete and stop selling their information. Users have submitted nearly two million data privacy requests through Permission Slip. CR estimates that the app has saved consumers four million hours of effort.
“Despite the advancements of our digital marketplace, consumer rights haven’t kept up,” said Marta L. Tellado, president and CEO of Consumer Reports. “It’s an honor that Fast Company has recognized CR’s innovation to strengthen consumers’ privacy, security, and safety. We’re committed to building a world where improving technology goes hand-in-hand with improving consumers’ lives.”
“Our list of the Most Innovative Companies is both a comprehensive look at the innovation economy and a snapshot of the business trends that defined the year,” said Fast Company editor-in-chief Brendan Vaughan. “We saw extraordinary innovation across the board in 2023, but we also saw a handful of clear patterns: the growing footprint and impact of AI, the triumphant return of live events, and great leaps forward in climate tech. We face daunting challenges on many fronts, but the solutions we celebrate in Most Innovative Companies give me plenty of hope about the future.”
Fast Company‘s editors and writers identified 606 organizations that are driving progress around the world and achieving remarkable milestones in all sectors of the economy.
