Handy Kitchen Helpers
This single-serve coffee maker turns out a first cup and subsequent cups quickly, and has controls to customize the size and brew strength. You can use pods only from Nespresso or those that say “Nespresso compatible.”
The R.W. Flame coffee maker received the top score in our brew test, and it automatically pauses if you want to grab a cup of coffee before the batch is done.
In addition to allowing you to brew a full pot of drip coffee, this machine lets you make individual cups using Nespresso capsules. Plus, it has a built-in milk frother.
This Bosch Benchmark dishwasher is great at washing and drying dishes and is much quieter than others we’ve tested. It also has tons of helpful features, like a third rack and a delayed start option.
With a soil sensor, an adjustable upper rack, and a stainless-steel interior, this lower-priced model does a good job of washing and drying and is excellent when it comes to energy use.
If you hate drying cups and containers by hand as you empty the machine, this LG dishwasher, which scores well in overall performance, could be for you.
The Panasonic NN-SD77PS heats foods quickly and evenly—and has a sensor that automatically adjusts cooking and reheating time.
Earning excellent ratings across many of our lab tests, this LG NeoChef comes equipped with touchpad controls and a microwave sensor, which takes the guesswork out of cooking.
Very good when it comes to even heating of food (though only mediocre at defrosting), this model scores well for ease of use and has a child lock.
Eggs slide right off the ceramic surfaces of this well-priced cookware set. And, according to the manufacturer, it’s not made with PTFE, a type of harmful “forever chemical.”
The main cavity of this air fryer is glass, not metal, so you can watch your food while it crisps. Later, you can use the glass container to store your leftovers. You can buy extra containers from Ninja as well.
One of our best-performing models, this bottom-freezer refrigerator has a fully accessible freezer compartment and easy-to-grip handles. The door is reversible, so you can change the direction of its swing to suit your kitchen.
When we tested these durable stainless steel containers, they maintained the freshness of the stored food well and had an excellent seal. Bernie Deitrick, a CR home products test engineer, bought this food storage container set for himself because they’re safer than glass options.
Fresh Home Finds
Exceptionally powerful suction makes this Shark upright an all-around winner. It’s particularly good at picking up dirt from bare floors, and we like that the brush roll has a self-cleaning feature so that hair is less likely to get tangled in it.
This less-expensive alternative performs well on bare floors and does a solid job of removing embedded dirt from carpets. It’s relatively light—about 15 pounds—and has a lift-away feature for portability and suction control.
The Casper Snow delivers stellar test results, a cool sleep experience, medium-soft firmness, and motion stability, and appeals to back and side sleepers of all sizes.
This 12-inch-thick Bob-O-Pedic mattress combines gel memory foam with individually wrapped coils (in the center) and firmer coils (along the perimeter). It’s actually softer on one side and firmer on the other, making it helpful for couples with different preferences.
With excellent scores for stabilization, this Earthfoam mattress also has top-notch ratings for back sleepers of all sizes in CR’s lab tests. It’s only 8 inches thick but pretty firm, scoring a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale.
With an excellent fit and a great price, these California Design Den sheets, a less-pricey cotton option, are described as quite soft by our testers.
These polyester linens won’t wrinkle much. They excelled in our strength, shrinkage, and fit tests, so they’ll stand the test of time.
Paper Towels
Bounty Select-a-Size Sheets
Bounty was our editors’ overall pick in our tests of absorbency, strength when wet, scrubbing strength, reusability, and more. Brawny paper towels were nearly as good as Bounty across the board (and even stronger when wet), but they cost half as much per sheet.
Paper Towels
Brawny Tear-A-Square
Hate vacuuming and mopping? Here’s your solution. This combo robovac and robomop cleans carpets better than most robotic vacuums, excels at picking up pet hair, and can mop your floors, too. Bonus: It costs less than many other robotic models.
This small room air purifier does a great job of removing dust, smoke, and pollen on low and high speeds. It has a quiet auto mode and a filter indicator, and it’s easy to use, clean, and carry. It doubles as a fan and has an app, so you can control it remotely.
Broom
Broombi The Original Broombi
This squeegee-style silicone broom won’t replace your traditional bristle broom (it doesn’t move over floors smoothly), but it’s great for pet hair because the strands don’t get stuck to the surface as you sweep it into a pile. It can also sweep wet messes into neat puddles that are easier to wipe off floors, and you can rinse and dry the broom quickly.
Odor Remover Spray
Zorbx Unscented Odor Remover
A CR home writer, Jodhaira Rodriguez, bought this odor-remover spray because it was the only product that performed well in our tests. “I love that the spray has no fragrance, so it’s not just masking smells with a stronger scent,” she says.
Wellness Winners
Containing 30 percent deet, these Ben’s wipes offer excellent protection against mosquitoes and ticks, and they make it easy to apply repellent more precisely than you can with a spray.
The best deet-free repellent in our ratings—with an active ingredient of 30 percent lemon eucalyptus—also happens to be one of the best-performing among all of our tested repellents. And CR’s testers found that, unlike many insect repellents, this one tends not to damage fabrics.
If you prefer an aerosol spray, this one, with 25 percent deet, is also excellent in fending off mosquitoes and ticks. One note: It can damage clothing and other materials, so you’ll want to apply with care.
This armband-style monitor gets top marks for accuracy, can detect irregular heartbeats, and allows multiple users to store readings.
Accurate, convenient, and comfortable, this blood pressure monitor offers plenty of features, but our testers noticed that it might be difficult for some users to wrap the cuff around their arm and align the artery marker.
A one-size-fits-most cuff that testers found easy to wrap around a wrist, this monitor offers similar accuracy to our top-rated Omron BP6350 (above) at a much lower price. It’s a bit noisier than other units.
This fragrance-free sunscreen aced our tough tests. It doesn’t contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, which may be harmful to the environment.
With a moderate citrus menthol aroma and a slight cooling sensation, this sunscreen lotion delivers excellent UVA protection and very good UVB (SPF) coverage. But it does leave a sticky, tacky, draggy feel with a sheen finish on the skin.
This Equate lotion outperformed several sunscreens that cost five times more in our tests. It doesn’t quite deliver on its SPF 50 label, but it provides solid broad-spectrum protection. Be aware: It leaves a sticky, slightly greasy film on skin.
You’d never guess, but these aren’t just good earbuds—they can work as over-the-counter hearing aids. They even come with a hearing test to help you customize them to your needs. We’ll be testing their hearing aid performance soon.
It may look like vintage enamel spatterware, but this insulated stainless steel travel mug is designed with performance in mind. In our tests, it was easy to use and clean, and kept hot drinks hot for hours.
Some of the best dryers we’ve tested come with prices that might make your hair stand on end (like nearly $600 for our top-rated Dyson Supersonic R). This impressive Shark is a lower-priced alternative.
Swim Cap
Soul Cap Large
We tested eight swim caps, and some were really tight and uncomfortable. Opinions varied, but when a senior tester, Dominque Herring, swims now, she uses the Soul Cap. It’s a roomy style that’s easy to take on and off and has a comfortable band. “I have longer hair,” she says, “and it fits perfectly snugly, without pulling or trapping a lot of air inside—and keeps my hair dry.”
Outdoor All-Stars
This impressive mower gets top ratings for mulching, cutting evenness, and handling. It’s quiet and comes with a second battery, providing enough run time to cut at least half an acre.
This battery-powered self-propelled rear-wheel-drive mower handles extremely well and also gets top ratings for mulching, noise, run time, and more.
Easy to push, pull, and turn, this cost-saving model gets very good scores across our tests, and it shines when it comes to mulching, producing fine clippings without leaving clumps. It’s a bit noisier than some others.
Our best battery trimmer hits it out of the park when it comes to trimming, edging, and handling, and it easily takes on tall grass and weeds. It runs for about 30 minutes on a full charge, about average for its class.
At less than half the price of our top model—but within 2 points in Overall Score—this string trimmer, which weighs just over 10 pounds, handles beautifully, trimming quickly and cleanly in a single pass. It’s also quieter than many others.
With top-notch handling and a score near the top for ease of use, this lightweight (7.3-pound) model aces every single performance test. It uses just a single 18-volt battery and thus may not last as long as similar models.
This 20-volt drill has superb speed and enough power for demanding tasks. You can count on its battery to last through long projects and recharge quickly.
Weighing in at 2.6 pounds, this 12-volt Skil has two speed ranges and gets high marks for power, charge time, and handling. But its run time could be better.
This brushless 24-volt model aces our tests for power, speed, and run time. It offers two speed ranges. On the downside, it takes around 85 minutes to charge an empty battery, which is longer than many other heavy-duty drills we’ve tested.
Weber may have the more recognizable name, but the Even Embers wins out in many of our tests. It preheats faster and heats more evenly. It also has a side burner, an infrared burner, and a much lower price. That said, CR members have found the Weber brand more reliable.
Cooler
Ninja Frost Vault Cooler
It’s perfect for barbecues and tailgating, of course, but this 65-quart cooler is also a good backup for power outages. It kept food at safe temperatures for days in our labs, with no condensation in the food storage drawers.
Monitor temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall, and more with this home weather station. The display is large and clear, and WiFi connectivity offers real-time monitoring even when you’re away from home.
This power snow shovel weighs just 20 pounds, making it easy to maneuver and take places you could never use a full-sized snow blower, like a deck or up a flight of stairs. But it still packs quite a punch, quickly and reliably working through tough snow piles and wintry mess. Its 80-volt battery can also be used in other Greenworks tools.
Paul Hope, a CR deputy editor, has more than a dozen of these solar lights in his yard. “I love that they have three settings, so I can use them on low to preserve the battery in spots that don’t need as much light,” he says. “They also come with a charger, which lets you put them in shady spots where they don’t get enough sun to fully recharge.”
Standout Tech Gear
This MacBook Pro offers exceptional performance and a stunning display. It handles demanding tasks with ease, offers long-lasting battery life, and delivers a speedy, reliable experience.
This inexpensive model, best for school or basic office work, has a battery life far longer than most other laptops of its size. The display is antireflective, but colors can be undersaturated.
A 13-inch laptop that detaches from the keyboard for use as a touchscreen tablet. Battery life is very good, but its performance speeds are better suited for general school or office work than for intensive graphics.
This 4K OLED TV does it all, with top marks for picture quality, high dynamic range (HDR) performance, and sound quality.
Very good color accuracy, very good picture quality, and a generous viewing angle make the price of this TCL TV especially notable. And the sound quality is better than on most models we’ve tested.
The picture quality and contrast are excellent on this 75-inch Hisense. It’s among the brightest models CR has tested, so it can handle being in a very sunny room.
Want to feel like you’re in the stadium as you watch the game? This 5.1.2-channel soundbar can get you there. In addition to great sound, its advanced features let you use it with your TV speakers and calibrate the output to your room.
This is an inexpensive compact model that, despite its size, delivers very good overall sound. It has built-in WiFi for playing music, podcasts, and radio using the Sonos app, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and more, even when the TV is off.
Casual listeners will probably find that this Bose soundbar works well for music and movie soundtrack playback. It features voice control and can access various internet audio streaming services over WiFi.
The iPad Pro is our top-rated larger tablet. It’s thin, light, and powerful. It has a gorgeous 13-inch display, impressive battery life, and cellular capability. The iPad A16 is a little smaller, not quite as fast, and doesn’t offer cellular. But it might make you just as happy for about $1,000 less.
Our testers love these small PreSonus wireless Bluetooth stereo speakers. They offer superb sound quality at a reasonable price, and at just 8.5 inches high, they’re an unobtrusive addition to any space.
Tired of seeing $1,200 prices on every new phone? The iPhone 16e is a welcome relief. It has a large 6.1-inch display, facial recognition technology, and AI technology. Plus, you can expect a good camera and reliable battery life.
Here’s a handy way to check pollutants like mold spores and wildfire smoke in your home. This Inkbird indoor air quality monitor has a large display and can measure carbon dioxide, humidity, particulates, and overall air quality.
Jim Willcox, a CR tech writer, bought the original Eero as his first wireless mesh system, which helped extend WiFi to his bedroom, the farthest room from the router. “But I recently replaced it with newer 6+ models for faster speeds and better security,” he says. “They cover every room in our house, from the upstairs bedrooms all the way to our deck.”
