How to Stack Coupons and Get Huge Discounts

See how Star Smith, a couponing wiz, packs on savings by combining discounts

Coupons are like pancakes: One may get the job done, but a stack of them can be a lot more satisfying. It’s referred to as coupon stacking, and experienced deal hunters employ every tool at their disposal to compound savings. Smartphones, club memberships, and rebate apps can all be used with manufacturer and retail coupons to make a coupon stack really add up.

While assembling your arsenal, don’t neglect to check individual retailer coupon policies for limitations on the number of offers you may apply to a purchase. Online retailers sometimes limit consumers to one coupon code per order, forcing shoppers to choose between free shipping or a percentage off, for instance. CVS and Walgreens are great outlets to try your hand at coupon stacking because both retailers allow a variety of avenues for discounts and both happen to come with a digital tutor.

Star Smith is an Atlanta-area content creator who shares weekly videos with more than 200,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel, “couponwithStar.” She breaks down the best deals from CVS and Walgreens circulars along with coupons and techniques to supercharge the deals.

“Ten years ago, couponing looked very different than what it looks like right now,” Smith says. “Coupons now are rebate apps like Fetch Rewards or Ibotta, and its digital coupons that you can find on a retailers app.”

In two videos posted to her YouTube channel in October, Smith walked subscribers through two sample deals, one for coupon newbies using digital coupons available through the CVS Extra Care app and another for more dedicated couponers using a mix of paper and digital coupons along with store rebates and loyalty club rewards.

    Star Smith's Simple Stack
“Toothpaste is an item that nobody in America should be paying full price for,” Smith says. To illustrate the point, she constructed a relatively simple Star-Stack using her smartphone with the CVS Extra Care membership app. A 4.2-ounce tube of Colgate Optic White Stain Fighting Toothpaste retails for $4.99. Smith purchased two for a total of $9.98 pretax. She went on to use her smartphone to apply three digital deals to her toothpaste buy.
