I am not a father, but I have had a father since before I was born, so I come to this topic with some authority. Dads, we owe you an apology. Not for shouting out “Mom” every time a television camera is aimed in our vicinity, not for taking you for granted every time you picked us up or dropped us off, and certainly not for rolling our eyes through your jokes. We’re sorry for the absolute trash gifts you’ve received every Father’s Day.
You sat idly by as we presented Mom with construction paper flowers made under the supervision of our elementary school teachers, the supermarket flowers we bought her after hitting you up for money in our teens, and the real flowers we had delivered the Friday before the Mother’s Day brunch we reserved at least two weeks in advance. There were also the years of robes, spa days, candles, cookies, handbags, slippers, perfumes, bubble bath, and even jewelry.
You may not have been keeping score, but the National Retail Foundation says 84 percent of us celebrated Mother’s Day this year, spending on average $274.02. That’s about $100 more than the average spend on dads in 2022, when 76 percent of U.S. adults celebrated his day.
“I’m not surprised that the difference is $100 because in general, fathers are kind of harder,” says Julie Kenney, a veteran of celebrity gifting. She now runs giftingexperts.com and doesn’t believe men are inherently more difficult to shop for. “Moms put out a lot more hints of what they want; dads are much more simple and like, ‘I don’t need anything.’”
So you smiled genuinely for Mom every May and graciously every June through all the years of goofy greeting cards, drugstore grill tool sets, novelty mugs, and those truly awful ties. You waved us away saying, “Save your money.” We made reservations for Mom but requested that you fire up the grill in celebration of Father’s Day.
We see the errors of our past and would like to right the present.
So Father’s Day shoppers, nothing says “I apologize” like a thoughtfully selected, joyfully presented gift that shows your dad you’ve been paying attention and you truly care. Some of these gifts may seem a little outside the box, but that’s a good thing. If you want different results, you gotta try some different things. So yes, there are objects that may push the boundaries, in a good way. Take a swing, and surprise your old man and yourself in the process. Your dad is worth the effort.
Pro tip: All year long, Kenney keeps a running list on her phone’s notes app of things that her husband and dad mention liking. When Father’s Day approaches, she fights the “I need nothing” messages by consulting the list. “Gift-giving is not hard as long as you just put a little bit of time and effort into it,” she says. Bye-bye: Ugly tie
Buy: Spanx Ultra Sculpt Cotton Power Boxer Briefs
With all due respect to the dad bod, when things just don’t fit like they used to and a drawstring waist is not an option, it may be time to call an audible. In 2010 Spanx introduced shapewear for men, with T-shirts designed to smooth unsightly bulges. Power Boxer Briefs go a step beyond with Superman-level sculpting that will give you 16-second abs.
His Mug Runneth Over
Four Sigmatic Think Organic Coffee
Bye-bye: Novelty mug

He is the “World’s Greatest Dad” and has the mugs to prove it. When his collection runneth over, add something else to the cup. Four Sigmatic’s fair-trade coffee beans are coated with lion’s mane and chaga mushrooms. The company claims that its Honduran-grown coffee with mushroom extract allows for crash-free focus and may even enhance brain function and immune support. (Note, though, that individuals may react differently to new foods, so consult your healthcare provider about integrating functional mushrooms into your diet.)
Bye-bye: BBQ accessories
Buy: Micro-Start XP-10 jump starter
Who does the guy you call when you need roadside assistance call when he needs roadside assistance? The last thing your dad needs is another BBQ accessory kit. The Micro-Start XP-10 is a compact jump starter that’s top-rated in CR’s tests. It can power up diesel vehicles up to 7.3L, and gas engines. Added bonuses: This model has a reserve power indicator plus two USB inputs, along with mobile phone and laptop connectors to power other electrical equipment. It will be a welcome tool in his arsenal.

The Bro Mask isn’t just dripping with 3 percent niacinamide (meant to boost hydration and treat dark spots), collagen, hyaluronic acid, peptides, green tea, licorice, and ginger. All of those components are packed into sheets sized-up to fit larger faces and made in two pieces so bearded folks can get the full effect.

An upgrade for dads who have embraced the belief that bald is beautiful. This dedicated head shaver features four blades and an ergonomic design that conforms to the contours of the head. Used in the shower or dry, it’s definitely a step up from blades and shavers not created expressly for maintaining a hairless dome.
Luxury for the Locks
Mela & Kera Touche Velours
Bye-bye: Baseball cap
Buy: Mela & Kera Touche Velours shampoo
Does your dad have a corner of the shower with a single bottle that’s supposed to clean his hair, face, and body? Go the other way with a true luxury shampoo. Mela & Kera shampoo (as in melanin and keratin, the building blocks of hair) is infused with hydrating Rose of Jericho meant to help retain moisture and other botanicals that cleanse hair, along with moringa oil, a monounsaturated fat that cleanses and moisturizes. I use this shampoo and can say it smells so good that your mom will likely help herself to some, too.
