    Carbon EL

ProForm ellipticals are manufactured by Icon Health & Fitness, the same company behind the popular NordicTrack line of exercise equipment. If you add an iFit membership (which costs extra), you’ll get access to studio classes and destination workouts (would you like to imagine your elliptical has a beach view?), as well as a function that allows the remote trainers to adjust the resistance on your elliptical automatically. But you’ll need to use iFit via your own tablet or smartphone, which can attach to a dedicated spot on the console and connect to the machine via Bluetooth. That’s because unlike some of ProForm’s higher-end models, the Carbon EL does not come with a built-in display. Bringing your own screen comes with significant savings, however. The Carbon EL also does not come with a chest-strap heart rate monitor, which is generally more accurate than checking your heart rate using the built-in handgrips.

    Detailed Test Results

Assembly: Elliptical Trainers usually require assembly. For this machine, assembly was more involved since quite a few threaded fasteners were included to attach a considerable number of unassembled parts. User manuals can help or hinder assembly. The diagrams that illustrated the steps were clear and detailed. All told, we found that the combination of written instructions and diagrams very helpful in the assembly process. Operation: The sounds this elliptical trainer made when pedaled were pleasant, the frame was considered responsive, and the pedal-arm linkage felt well constructed and tight. Controls: The resistance level controls are often the most commonly accessed buttons and on this elliptical trainer are large in size, which makes it easy to use them during exercise. The controls are laid out as you would expect with the increment control on the top or right, or for a dial control, having a clockwise rotation. This machine has individual increment and decrement controls which were positioned poorly; separated from one another. Access to the level controls was unobstructed by the stationary handgrips. Display: Seeing a numeric and graphic indication of the resistance-level setting is convenient. The resistance-level setting is displayed momentarily as a numeric value, usually when the resistance setting has changed and is not displayed as a graphical image. Glare does not affect the visibility of the display. Ergonomics: Elliptical Path: The pedaling action was supportive. The machine responded well to acceleration and deceleration and assisted the user's effort. The pedaling motion at the front and back of the elliptical cycle flowed nicely around the transitions. The pedal's changing angle throughout the elliptical cycle was not ideal and created a lack of support. To maintain good lower-body alignment, a minimal side-to-side pedal separation is best. The spacing on this machine was considered excellent. Exercise: Stepping through the resistance levels resulted in uneven changes; where changes were slightly inconsistent from one level to the next. The difference between the lowest and highest resistance-level setting determines the range of exercise intensity; which for this machine was considered good.

    About

The ProForm Carbon EL is part of the Elliptical exercisers test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Elliptical Exercisers models like the Carbon EL are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Ergonomics: Ergonomics considers how well an elliptical accommodates people of various sizes and aspects of the pedaling motion.

Exercise range: Exercise range considers aspects of exercise intensity and measures incline and the effort to pedal the machine through the resistance level settings.

Ease of use: Ease of use considers ease of use aspects of controls, display and using the programs.
