Sound quality: We found the TAT4506 delivers sound quality that falls in the fair range - meaning that it has sonic shortcomings that leave a lot to be desired when listening to music but don't rule it out for dialog and communication and excellent active noise reduction. With the noise cancelling mode engaged the bass (as in bass drums, bass guitars, stand-up bass, etc.) has good impact and goes deep, but is a bit prominent and somewhat boomy and distorted (warbles - sounds like it is underwater) with some program material. The midrange (voices, guitars, horns, etc.) is somewhat grainy, a bit hazy, and congested and distorted (noticeable background vibrato/chorus effect); the tonal balance ranges from fairly even to a touch lean depending on how they are positioned in the ears. The treble (cymbals, the upper range of violins, etc.) is extended but is somewhat smeared, and a bit sizzly (sounds that should have a delicate shimmer have a sound reminiscent of bacon frying) and prominent. Does a decent job of recovering room ambience; depending on how it are positioned in the ears they may sound somewhat open or somewhat closed. Decent dynamics. Warmish to mixed (warmish bass, midrange tends toward neutral) character depending on how they are positioned in the ears. The overall sound can best be summarized as somewhat bassy and grainy and distorted. Noise Canceling: Excellent noise reduction across the entire frequency range with the low frequencies reduced the most. The noise canceling feature does not produce any background noise that can be heard when there is no audio program to drown it out.
Comfort: We found that these earphones as typical of in-ear models they produce a sense of pressure in the ear canal opening might be uncomfortable for some. Users will probably find that this model stays in place with no problems for casual use and that they are stable during fairly vigorous head movement. Hitting the stem that hangs out of the ear can knock an earphone lose and cause it to fall out of the ear.
