Vitamix recalled about 105,000 blender containers because they can separate from their blade base, exposing the blades and posing a risk of laceration.

The company has received 11 such reports of lacerations when consumers' hands came in contact with exposed blades.

The recall involves Vitamix Ascent and Venturist series 8-ounce blending bowls and 20-ounce blending cups with blade date codes of March 2018 or earlier. The date codes are expressed as MM-YY. For example, March 2018 would be noted as "03-18."

The date is laser-etched onto the top of the blade in the blade base. If a green or orange dot appears on the bottom of the blade base, the container has already been repaired.

These blending cups and bowls are clear containers with a black base that features an integrated blade, and which fits onto the blender base to operate. Some were sold individually and some were sold together with Vitamix's Venturist 1200 blenders.

The affected products were sold nationwide at Costco and Williams-Sonoma, and on Vitamix's website, from April 2017 through July 2018 for $24 to $500.

Blending cups and bowls made in April 2018 and after have a new design that Vitamix says mitigates the issue.

"We implemented a new gasket into the design," says Scott Tennant, director of communications for the company.

What to Do

Stop using the recalled containers immediately. Then call Vitamix for a free repair kit at 888-847-8842, or go to the Vitamix site, where you can enter your name and ZIP code to find out whether you have a recalled product, and whether Vitamix has already scheduled a replacement kit to be sent to you. (Vitamix says it is sending kits to consumers for whom they have records of having bought recalled containers.)

"For those consumers who own 20-ounce cups or 8-ounce bowls manufactured prior to the design change," says Tennant, "we will send free of charge an easy-to-use repair kit." You'll replace the orange gasket, no tools needed, with a new gasket. That's it.

You'll find 10 Vitamix models in Consumer Reports' blender ratings, including the Vitamix Ascent Series A3500, $650. The A3500 was not sold with either of the recalled containers.
