I recently discovered I’m allergic to cocamidopropyl betaine, a synthetic compound derived from coconut oil that’s nearly ubiquitous in skin care and household products. We’re talking hand soap, shampoo, lotion, dish soap, detergent, toothpaste, contact lens solution—the list is exhaustingly long.

At one point, it seemed as if the more challenging aspect of this new development was purging my beauty stash in a way that would make Marie Kondo proud. I didn’t immediately realize the ramifications. Leaving the house meant I always had a compact bottle of my allergen-free soap on hand. Traveling or even spending a night away from home simply meant upping the ante.

So this summer, before heading off on a trip abroad, I was determined to find a way to tote along my essentials in a travel-friendly way. My goal was to find refillable bottles that a.) wouldn’t leak all over my baggage, b.) were lightweight, and c.) could contain two weeks’ worth of lotion, hand soap, shampoo, and conditioner.

Cue this colorful set, which I took a chance on after spotting it on Amazon. I was drawn to its vivid colors—a small consolation for giving up a little luxury I once looked forward to: sampling hotel toiletries from upscale or trendy brands.

I liked that most of each bottle is made from silicone, not plastic, and that using them provided a rather enjoyable tactile experience. The container’s wide mouth made it a cinch to fill, even when attempting to dispense liquids with higher viscosity, like hand lotion or conditioner. And the flip-top caps made it easy to use, especially with one hand, when needed.

These compact bottles hold 3 ounces, they’re TSA-approved, and they even come with a handy, see-through case for added protection. Throughout my trip, I traveled between four hotels, took just as many flights, and never had a problem with leakage.

Best of all, they were easy to clean after my vacation, ready to be refilled for my next adventure.
