Used Cars That Give the Most for Your Money

These 3-year-old models are safe, reliable, and versatile

Three-year-old cars are the Goldilocks of the used-auto market. They’re new enough that drivers can get contemporary features, safety systems, and updated styling. Yet they're old enough that previous owners have borne the brunt of most of the depreciation; these vehicles typically sell for about half of what they cost when they were new.

And thanks to the popularity of leasing, there’s a steady stream of low-mileage, high-quality models for shoppers to choose from.

Consumer Reports' annual reliability survey compiles problems reported by CR members for more than 420,000 vehicles, and the data is used to show how reliable an older model has been.
