About - LG WM8000H[V]A

The LG WM8000H[V]A is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the WM8000H[V]A are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.
About This Brand

South Korean company LG was the first to market with steam washers; the company claims its machines provide real steam (created by a steam generator). The latest wrinkle from LG is what it calls the Allergiene cycle. That cycle, says LG, reduces and removes 95 percent of dust mites and pet dander from a load. LG washers range in price from $900 to $1,600.

I will never buy a LG product again. I have had my washing machine one year and have had problems with leaking for 9 months. LG has sent a tech out numerous times and every time its something different. First I was using the wrong detergent. Funny it did not leak when I bought it and used the same detergent for 4 months. Second, I was using the wrong amount. Same amount I used the first 4 months. Then the washer was not balanced. Right, because the tech moved the washer around while working on it. Using the amount detergent to keep it from leaking the clothes come out dull. The whiles off-gray. If I could sell this washer to someone I would. Nothing but problems.

I bought this machine less than a year ago, and already the technician has been here six times! The worst part is customer service. An outsourced phone call with people trained to say the same bland message over and over no matter what your complaint. This top of the line machine broke down after six months. I had it repaired. then the same problem persisted, and then just last week, the entire motor had to be replaced !
now it is not draining water or spinning just one week after the last huge4 hour repair! Basically, they should have replaced the machine, as was the recommendation of the technician, but LG refused. Again I am sitting at home, wasting my day waiting for the repair man, and this is on a ten month old top-of-the-line machine???? i would say NEVER EVER buy an LG product, as the same thing happened with my dryer when it was barely two months old.

Comment:
We bought this washer in November 2012 because we needed a larger capacity washer and this washer definitely fits the bill for that. I've never owned an LG appliance before and had previously only used Whirlpool or Kenmore. I decided to give LG a shot since it's the largest home washer on the market and it received good ratings from Consumer Reports. We can wash our king size comforter, comforter cover, sheets, and pillow case in a single load. There are a ton of options for different cycles and you can even create your custom one. The washer itself seemed to do a good job washing and getting out stains that were pretreated. We have two young boys so this happened a LOT. The washer also is very quiet and doesn't vibrate during spin cycles. Although that's not a huge deal for us since it's located in our basement.

Fast forward to March 2014. I went to turn the power on the washer and no lights. I checked my circuit breaker and made sure there was power going to the outlet by plugging in my dryer. So I called LG and explained my problem. After some questions from the LG representative, she diagnosed the problem as a faulty control board. However, since the washer only comes with a 1 year warranty, she advised we would have to pay for the repair. I told her that is ridiculous and a washer costing more than $1k should last more than 1 year and 4 months. At that point she told me as a one time courtesy they could extend the warranty and cover the cost of repair. She provided me the number to the local authorized repair shop to set up an appointment. I called them and was told they will need to pre-order the control board and will call me once the part arrives.

I told a friend about our ordeal and she told me the same exact thing happened to her LG washer. In her case, they were unable to fix the washer so they provided a refund. She bought an extended warranty from the store so she didn't go through LG warranty though. I'm really hoping that won't be the case for us since I'm not sure LG would do that at this point and I had to remove doors and trim from two door openings so the washer would fit through. As long as it gets fixed, I'll be happy so now I'm just waiting. I'll report back with an update once the part comes in and the washer is repaired. I'm glad LG stepped up and is willing to repair the washer out of warranty even though it really should have lasted much longer than just a year and few months.
