We've tested hundreds of flat-panel TVs this last year. And while our complete HDTV Ratings and Recommendations (both available to subscribers) feature sets of all screen sizes and display types, for this gift guide we focused primarily on LCD TVs of 37-inches and smaller.

These smaller sets have digital tuners that work with an antenna and are good choices to replace an older, analog TV set—an important consideration because most analog TV signals will cease in February 2009. (For more information about the pending switchover to all digital TV in the U.S., see our free online guide to DTV transition.)

All of the sets listed here are solid performers, with 720p high-definition resolution and pleasing picture quality. With year-end sales, you might find them for less than the prices shown.

26-inch LCD TVs

Two new sets we're testing look like good choices:

  • ViewSonic N2690W (shown), $590
  • Sharp LC-26SB24U, $600

The following previously tested models offer fine picture quality. The Panasonic has a wider viewing angle than most other LCD sets.

  • Panasonic TC-26LX85, $600
  • Insignia NS-LCD26-09, $480
  • Sony Bravia KDL-26M4000, $600
  • Samsung LN26A450, $700

32-inch LCD TVs

These recommended models are still top values in this size:

  • Toshiba Regza 32CV510U, $600
  • Insignia NS-LCD32-09, $550

37-inch LCD TVs

These promise strong performance, based on initial tests:

  • Insignia NS-LCD37-09 (shown), $680
  • Toshiba 37CV510U, $730

Also consider this previously tested model:

  • Vizio VU37L HDTV10A, $700
