Better days ahead?

Last reviewed: January 2009

There might be some bright spots for consumers. New federal regulations, expected to be issued this winter, will tackle some of the most pernicious credit-card fees. Consumer groups and others have been pushing for more comprehensive mortgage reform and regulation of financial institutions at the federal level. And many economists and politicians support the idea of a new economic stimulus package that might offer tax incentives to boost housing demand and more assistance for the unemployed.

Over the long term, a slim majority of those we polled see brighter days ahead: 52 percent said they'll be better off in five years than they are now.
