Avira Free Anti-Virus recommended by Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports News: March 08, 2012 10:38 AM

The rise of mobile malware might be grabbing headlines these days, but that doesn't mean attacks on computers have let up. Luckily, our Ratings show that you don't have to spend a fortune—or even a penny—protecting your PC.

We tested four free anti-malware programs and recommend Avira Free Anti-Virus. A free package like this one will protect you against viruses and other malware, including live online exploits.

But if you want a full suite with a heftier set of features, you'll have to pay. We recommend four packages, ranging in price from $45 to $90, from among the 14 suites we tested. These add protection against spam, better protection from live threats on websites, and firewalls to the mix. They also include parental-control features.
