The Chrysler Group is recalling 2012 Jeep Compass and 2012 Jeep Patriot SUVs due to faulty fuel tank valves, said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). About 1,700 of the recalled Jeep sport-utility vehicles have damaged roll-over fuel valves, which may leak during collisions or roll-over accidents, increasing the risk of a fire.

According to the NHTSA, the recalled Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot SUVs were made from December to January. Chrysler told the Associated Press that it is unaware of any injuries or fires resulting from the damaged fuel valves. (See the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's crash test videos of the Jeep Compass and the Jeep Patriot.)

In June, Chrysler is expected to begin notifying owners of 2012 Jeep Compass and 2012 Jeep Patriot SUVs affected by this recall. They will be instructed to bring their recalled Jeeps to local dealerships where mechanics there will replace the fuel tank for free.

For more information, consumers can call Chrysler's toll-free customer support (800-853-1403, reference Recall Number M11) or visit the NHTSA website: www.SaferCar.gov.
