Keyfree app replaces conventional keys with your smart phone

Digital keys can be shared among friends, family

    Published: January 05, 2015 04:45 PM

It is only a matter of time before our smart phones become the single do-it-all device that replaces a calendar, wallet, remote control, and even keys. Canada-based Keyfree Technologies has taken a step in that direction with what it calls a "digital car key solution," putting the power of a key fob in your smart phone. The company's product was on display at CES 2015.

Keyfree actually replaces the traditional key setup with an app that communicates with the car via Bluetooth. As you approach the car, it senses the smart phone and unlocks. The conventional twist ignition is replaced with a "push-to-start button" that requires installation.

The company claims the digital security backing this system is military grade. Users can "share" digital keys with family or friends using the app. The original owner can turn off those shared keys or set restrictions remotely. Users can also track their car when being used by shared drivers—a handy feature for monitoring a teen.

The Keyfree system costs $199, plus the cost of installation. It may also require a bypass of the security system. Keyfree Technologies also suggests that its system of sharing digital keys could make a convenient platform for a car sharing or rental business.

Keyfree is similar in some areas of functionality to GM's OnStar RemoteLink, where drivers can unlock and start GM vehicles from their phone. With consumers holding on to their cars longer than ever, there is real appeal in such products that can add modern conveniences to older models.
