Fiat Chrysler Automobiles apparently has lost confidence in its products. Despite touting "We're so confident in the quality of our vehicles, that we're backing them with a 5-Year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty," the company has announced plans to cut the mileage coverage nearly in half.
Starting with the 2016 model year, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will reduce the length of its powertrain warranty from five years or 100,000 miles, to five years or 60,000 miles—whichever comes first. The reduced coverage impacts all gasoline-powered Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram trucks sold in the United States.
For Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram trucks, bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage will remain at three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Fiat vehicles will continue with a 4-year/ 50,000-mile warranty. Before Chrysler's 2009 bankruptcy, the automaker offered a lifetime limited powertrain warranty.

The move follows an industry trend toward shorter warranties. General Motors made a similar announcement in March, cutting its five-year powertrain warranties from 100,000 miles to 60,000 miles.
This move to 60,000 miles of coverage brings Chrysler in line with not only the GM family of vehicles but also other brands, including Ford, Honda, Mazda, Scion, Subaru, Toyota, and Volkswagen.
Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi (except Lancer Evolution, Ralliart, and Sportback Ralliart) remain the outliers, with a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty, but only for the first owner. Subsequent owners have coverage under a 5-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle warranty.
