More Than 3 Million Bissell Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaners Recalled Due to Burn Hazard
The recalled steam cleaners can expel hot water or steam onto users while heating or during use, posing a burn hazard.
Bissell has recalled 3.2 million handheld steam cleaners in the U.S. because the devices can expel hot water or steam onto users while heating or during use, posing a burn hazard. About 355,000 additional steam cleaners were sold in Canada.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice, Bissell has received 183 reports of hot water or steam escaping from the product, including 157 reports of minor burn injuries.
Consumer Reports has evaluated the Bissell Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaner and Sanitizer. During our evaluation, we found that the steam cleaner’s body became extremely hot during operation and that hot water leaked from the cap when we forgot to empty the water tank before refilling it.
Details of the Bissell Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaner Recall
The recall: More than 3 million steam cleaners in the model series 39N7 and 2994 (models 39N7, 39N71, 39N72, 39N73, 39N75, 39N76, 39N77, 39N78, 39N79, 39N7A, 39N7C, 39N7B, 39N7D, 39N7E, 39N7F, 39N7H, 39N7J, 39N7M, 39N7N, 39N7P, 39N7Q, 39N7T, 39N7V, 39N7W, 39B7U, 39N7V, 39N7X, 29946, 29947, 29948, 29949, 2994B, 2994C, 2994D, and 2994W). The words “STEAM SHOT” or “POWER STEAMER” are printed on the product. All colors, including green, pink, blue, orange, white, black, purple, and red, are included in the recall.
The risk: The recalled steam cleaners can expel hot water and steam while heating or during use, posing a burn hazard.
Incidents/injuries: There have been 183 reports made to Bissell of hot water and steam being expelled from the steam cleaner. Minor burn injuries were reported in 157 of these reports.
Where and when sold: The recalled steam cleaners were sold from August 2008 through May 2024 at Target, Walmart, and other department and home goods stores nationwide, and online at bissell.com, amazon.com, hsn.com, and other websites.
The remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled steam cleaners, even if their products appear to be okay, the manufacturer says. They should remove the product label from the bottom of the steamer, place the sticker on the side under the Bissell logo, and cut the cord of the steam cleaner near the base of the device. A photo of the steam cleaner with the cut cord is required with your recall request form.
Consumers can opt to receive a $60 credit to be used toward a purchase on the Bissell site or a $40 refund for each of the recalled steam cleaners. If a consumer owns more than one recalled model, a separate recall request form must be filed for each one. Credits and refunds will both be delivered within six weeks after submission of information, the manufacturer says. Bissell says consumers should not dispose of the Steam Shot until they have received their digital credit or refund.
