121,680 Galanz Retro Refrigerators Recalled Due to Risk of Fire Hazard
Internal electrical components can short-circuit and catch fire, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It has received reports of 34 fires and one death.
The appliance manufacturer Galanz is recalling more than 121,000 retro-styled top-freezer refrigerators because they have internal electrical components that can short-circuit and start a fire, potentially causing injury or death, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The CPSC has received reports of 34 fires to date, including one that resulted in a death. If you own one of these fridges, stop using it immediately, unplug it, and contact Galanz to schedule a free in-home repair.
The five recalled models were sold at Home Depot and on Amazon between January 2019 and September 2022. They came in four colors: black, blue, red, and white. They haven’t been tested or rated by Consumer Reports, though we’ve evaluated other Galanz models.
Galanz has set up a dedicated phone line, email address, and online web portal to help you find out if your fridge is affected and schedule your free in-home repair.
Details of the Galanz Refrigerator Recall
Recalled models: The recall involves five Galanz retro-styled top-freezer models sold in black, blue, red, and white finishes. They can be identified by the following model numbers: BCD-215V-62H, GLR76TRDER, GLR76TBKER, GLR76TBEER, and GLR76TWEER, with date codes ranging from December 2018 through December 2020.
The model number and date code, formatted as YYYYMM, are located on a nameplate on the back of the fridge in the upper-left corner. You can determine if your unit is affected by entering the model number and date code on the recall website.
These fridges were sold at Home Depot stores nationwide and online at Amazon for $330 to $520.
The recall affects about 121,680 refrigerators sold in the U.S.
The problem: Internal electrical components can short-circuit and ignite, creating fire and burn hazards. The CPSC says it’s aware of 34 reports of fires linked to the refrigerators, including one that resulted in a death.
The fix: Consumers should unplug and stop using these refrigerators immediately and contact Galanz Americas for a free in-home repair.
