More than 1.8 Million SharkNinja Foodi Multi-Cookers Recalled Due to Burn Risk
Pressure-cooking lids can be opened while in use, allowing hot contents to escape
SharkNinja has recalled more than 1.8 million Foodi OP300 Series multi-cookers in the U.S. and about 184,000 in Canada because the pressure-cooking lid can be opened during use, allowing hot contents to escape and cause burns.
Ninja, which was combined with vacuum-maker Shark and renamed SharkNinja, has received 106 reports of burn injuries, including more than 50 reports of second- or third-degree burns to the face or body, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says. Twenty-six lawsuits related to the product have been filed.
The recall applies to all Ninja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cookers, as well as replacement pressure cooker lids purchased separately. Several models in the OP300 series appear in CR’s multi-cooker ratings, with the OP302 earning a very good Overall Score in tests conducted several years ago.
In a statement, SharkNinja said customer safety was a top priority and that it was conducting the recall in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada. It directed consumers to cpsc.gov or its own website, ninjakitchen.com, for more information. A spokesperson did not respond to CR’s question about why it took dozens of injuries and lawsuits before a recall was issued.
The company told CR that it has reached out to consumers to inform them of the recall directly by email, text, and postal mail if necessary. It has also notified consumers of the recall on social media and asked retailers to put up posters in their stores and notify their customers of the recall as well.
